Identifying Beetles in Baltimore

Beetles wings are only exposed during flight and are easily identifiable by the hard outer shell that covers them. There are three different sections: the head, thorax, and abdomen.

When beetles eat they remain unseen and this is when they cause the most amount of damage when eating wood structures. The Bark beetle, Powder Post Beetle, Horned Beetle, Asian Beetle, Citrus Long Horned Beetle, and Old House Borer Beetle all eat wood. The damage that beetles are expected to create is extensive but it is not known exactly how much yet.

Adult beetles do not eat wood but beetle larvae do. If you see holes that beetles have created the larvae have already left and this was their exit hole. They often show up in wood or furniture. Beetles in Baltimore are generally attracted to the same type of wood they were born in and there could be a nearby infestation if you see this.
